The Improved List

1. Cleveland Browns:
up sides: Made a lot of trades happen, when you manage to upgrade your HB from Jamal Lewis to LT youve done something right, then ontop of that when you can get Urlacher, Vilma, Wimbley and Merriman as your starting LB's, your opponents offense is gonna have hell to deal with. He managed to maintain all of his star players in the process as well. BigZ has also managed to get A LOT of depth, Namely Frye being his third string QB. The players he's picked up are extremely young which only increases their value. The Browns also have the best corner duo in the league.

down sides: could be a bust on WR's if Ted Ginn Jr. doesnt turn out well, also doesnt have that much experience on the o-line. Roy Williams is whats holding together his receiving core, but with Carson Palmer it shouldnt be too much of a problem. Donte Whitner is the "trojan horse" of his defense, kind of leaves a gap at FS but he'll develop into an elite FS later on (and as Whitner being considered a weakness on this team, offenses will get eaten up)

2. Tennesee Titans
upsides: has one of the best (if not the best) D-lines, facing Peppers is scary enough on his own but when you have to face VB, John Henderson and Tommie Harris, your QB's in for a painful night. Has got good depth at the CB position and with Michael Lewis and Chris Hope at the Safety positions, he wont have to worry about opposing QB's raking in passing yards. Has got extremely talented LB's with Briggs, Davis and Bullucks. Also managed to put together a DEADLY receiving core, Moose, Reggie Wayne and Calvin Johnson should put the opposing defense on their heels. Then adding LJ to the works just adds to opposing teams misery.

downsides: didnt make any improvements to the offensive line, Greg Olsen could be a bust at TE.

3. Carolina Panthers
upsides: has established an insane WR-core, managed to hold onto Smith and still acquire Coles in the process. Also locked a hold on one of the best (if not the best) TE, Tony Gonzalez. Has kept a strong offensive line and got a great backup in Trent Green, and then Jackson as a third stringer. Has got good depth at HB with Benson backing up McGahee. Got Darnell Dockett with a steal of a price and will fill that second DT slot. Managed to get Hester who will surely take about 20-30 yards off of how far the offense needs to get to the endzone. Got a lot of good rookies in the draft.

downsides: got worse at the DE positions, rookies filling the slots of lost players. could improve at SS.

4. Arizona Cardinals
upsides: Has great depth at HB, Dunn playing as a backup. Upgraded at CB with acquisitions such as Charles Woodson, Jonathan Josepth and Shawntae Spencer. Has got elite safeties with Wilson and Bullucks. Upgraded tremendously at the offensive line. Held on to key veteran players and made smart draft picks to fill holes in his depth chart. Only good can come of his LB's, Joey Porter, Greenwood and Brooks should provide a well balanced team. Has gone overlooked since he hasnt been a part of many big trades lately, but definately ranks up there.

downsides: got hurt badly at WR's, the loss of Fitz and Boldin has to hurt and will have to rely more on the running game.

5. New York Giants
upsides: put together a fairly young defensive squad, got rid of most of the older players. Managed to get Ronnie Brown as a replacement for Tiki. Has got some of the best depth at the QB position. Upgraded his receiving core by acquiring Lee Evans. Moving Kiwanuka to DE allowed Strahan to be dealt, good move on the part of the GM. Filled his LB's with talent, Sims, Morgan and Fujita make it fairly well balanced. Has nice youth at SS with Mike Huff, Nick Collins was another nice addition. Tye Hill will provide him with a nice future at CB when Madison goes.

downsides: Lost Manning and doesnt have a dominant starting QB. Struggles with his Kicker being a rookie. A lot of his draft selections werent starters. Could have filled holes at DT.

6. New Orleans Saints
upsides: Really improved on their offense, Bush will have a permanent role as a starter and can develop. Nice WR’s to add to Drew Bree’s arsenal. Moss, Galloway and Boldin will tear through opposing DB’s. Has established a very strong defensive line with some key veterans (Aaron Schobel and Warren Sapp being the main two). Upgraded his LB’s with DJ Williams, Antonio Pierce and Bart Scott putting on saints uniforms. Darren Sharper was another nice addition to the squad.

downsides: Didn’t improve at all at CB’s and might have to watch out for the opposing teams passing game. Two main players on the D-Line are getting older (Schobel’s 30 and Sapp’s 34).\

7. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
upsides: Really improved his offense with great picks ups like Randy Moss, Brian Westbrook, Steve McNair and Owen Daniels. Should see a lot more of an approvement coming from their offense. Made a lot of good trades and held onto a sturdy defense. The underrated Deltha O’Neal compliments Ronde Barber very well.

downsides: Poor selections in the draft, a lot of second rounders wont have the chance to shine, they were placed far down on the depth chart. Still has a very old team and with the lack of rookie participation they could find themselves in some trouble down the road.

8. Baltimore Ravens
Upsides: Upgraded on an already sturdy pass defense. Antoine Winfield will act as a nice second CB. Offensive WR’s will have a difficult time getting open. Mike Peterson was another excellent acquirement to the Ravens squad, making an already insane set of LB’s even better. Made smart moves and got Chris Chambers, who will be throwing on a Ravens uni for the first time. J-Roc is a perfect fit for this Ravens team, he reminds me of a young and stronger Steve McNair and should fill his shoes exceptionally well.

downsides: Doesn’t have the best set of receivers, probably should have put more time into upgrading them and left his defense alone. Will have to wait a few years before Marshawn can develop into a #1 back. Will be set back a few years with him and J-Roc.

9. Miami Dolphins
upsides: Eli Manning was a very nice addition to the Dolphins franchise, Larry Fitzgerald was also an extremely sweet addition, he and Manning should connect for some nice yardage. Matt Birk was another nice pickup. Overall they have a well balanced offensive squad. Has got one of the best defensive end duo’s in the league with Castillo and Taylor. Also improved in pass defense with Terrence Newman and Antrel Rolle being aquired.

downsides: Got worse at HB (but not by too much) the loss of Brown took a tole. Loss of Joey Porter also really hurt their LB’s. Wasn’t that active in the draft

10. Atlanta Falcons
upsides: Got the best WR in the game, Chad Johnson. Got rid of the old Warrick Dunn and got Deuce McAllister in his place. Lost Deanglo Hall but got Lito Sheppard as a more than suitable replacement for him. Also has Fakhir Brown at the second CB slot. Will prove to be a fairly potent offensive team. Chad Pennington should produce better numbers with Chad Johnson than Michael Vick could have.

downsides: Made a lot of horizontal moves on the defense, could have improved it a lot more. If Jarvis Moss turns out to be a bust, there’ll be a very large hole that needs to be filled on the defensive line.

11. Oakland Raiders
upsides: Improved upon the worse O-Line in the league. Waters, Bober were some nice pickups. Improved greatly at HB. Clearly a more run-oriented team with Vick as QB and Edge as HB. Got better at pass defense. Samuel and Vasher should be able to deal with almost any WR-duo and incase they’re overwhelmed Rhodes and Considine provide backup. The overall abilities of the DE’s has increased slightly and big things are expected of Trent Cole.

downsides: Degraded at WR, the loss of Randy Moss hurt and Reggie Brown will have trouble filling his shoes. The DT has become a bit of a concern and Peko’s abilities have been questioned. Also was out of the draft so couldn’t pick up any of this years rookies and lost the 1st overall pick.

12. Pittsburgh Steelers
upsides: has above average LB’s and managed to improve on his DE’s quite a lot. Got sweet depth at HB, Deangelo is one of the best backups in the league and will eventually become of starter quality. Maintained fairly good CB’s and still held on to a lot of his star players.

downsides: Is at a bit of a lack at WR. Although he has good depth at CB, he lacks someone to step out and defend against the better WR’s such as Chad Johnson or Terrell Owens.

13. San Francisco 49ers
Upsides: Had a good draft and incorporated the players picked into starting positions. Ward gives the 49ers a veteran for Smith to throw to. Kept Gore and managed to maintain a strong offensive line. Staley, Rice, Branch, Woodley and McCauley will all benefit from their starting or near-starting roles. This will improve them and make them fairly well-off in the future. Held onto a young team and shouldn’t have to worry about too many people retiring. Rucker was also a VERY nice addition.

downsides: would have been nice to see a strong LB’s being added to the 49ers roster. Walt Harris is getting very old and might have to rely on Harper next year if Harris retires. Bernard just came off a bad season and might struggle in this upcoming one.

14. Dallas Cowboys
upsides: Held on to key receivers and still have a young QB who will develop into a team centerpiece. Made some nice adjustments on the d-line. Ekuban and Smith are two great ends and really strengthen their trenches. Chris Hovan just came off a pretty good season and should carry it onto this one. Had an extremely good draft, Landy came out as a smart choice. Has a very talented and young set of DB’s.

downsides: Loss of Roy Williams had to hurt. Ware is another upsetting loss. Going to have to rely on a very strong passing game because the run will probably get shut down fairly easily.

15. Denver Broncos
upsides: Improved tremendously on the defensive line, opposing HB’s will have trouble on toss plays. Warren and Kampman will also wreak havoc upon the other teams QB, he’ll have a lot less time in the pocket and im sure will be force into making impromptu decisions. Also upgraded his LB’s to include spectacular players like Adalius Thomas and EJ Henderson. Henderson should also improve with time. Got rid of his old DB’s and added Stuart Schweigert, Jermaine Phillips and Nnamdi Asomugha, all of which haven’t hit their prime yet. Also got better backup WR’s.

downsides: Although he got younger at DB’s, he lost out on some key players such as John Lynch and Champ Bailey. Should have spent more time improving his offense, only has a mediocre QB.
